Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a raised bed recommended for arthritic and older dogs?
When dog beds or bedding are placed on a cold floor condensation rapidly builds up leaving the dog lying on a cold damp bed which is unsuitable or any dog but particularly for those suffering with arthritis or circulatory problems. Do you not think that if we laid on a kitchen floor every night we might wake up feeling cold and stiff? Even with a carpet under a dog bed mattress the dog may still be exposed to draughts that occur at floor level. The Dog Bed Company raised wood bed provides comfort and a more even temperature.

Why does my dog not like to lie on our floor with under heating?
Dogs often find a floor with under heating too warm. They are unable to cool down indoors so will often try and find somewhere cooler to lie – even your sofa!

Why are there so many hairs, dust and general grime inside my dog’s bed?
Mould and mildew builds up under a damp bed that is directly on the floor which attracts moulted hair, dust particles and sometimes even fleas and common dust mite, which in a matter of day’s results in a smelly crust that only thorough washing and airing will cure. The Dog Bed Company raised bed allows the dust and hair particles to fall through the beds slats to the floor where they can be easily vacuumed or swept away. As the mattress is off the floor it is well aired and insects and fleas cannot find the warm moist conditions between the bedding and carpet in which to thrive.

Are your dog beds actually handmade in England?
The Dog Bed Company wooden bed frames are handmade from top quality oak and pine by a professional joiner in Arundel and are then waxed and polished by ourselves according to the customer’s specification. The Cluster Fibre Mattresses are produced and made for us by an English company who specialises in anti-allergy pillows. All the covers are made up and sewn by ourselves.

Why should I buy a bed from The Dog Bed Company when I can get one a lot cheaper from a pet shop?
Our wooden beds are solid and sturdy and built to last, and our mattresses stay thick and luxurious if looked after such as using The Dog Bed Company Protective Inner Liner. Cheaper beds are made from poor quality materials which rot, smell or break easily.

What bed size would you recommend for my dog?
Please refer to The Dog Bed Company Size Guide.

My dog gets very dirty and so I need to find a bed that can cope with this?
We have designed a system of protective covers to not only keep your mattress dry and non-smelly but also to keep the actual cover clean. All our covers are machine washable and the mattress may also be washed at 40C if required.
